Lets face it, there are a lot of martial arts schools in the Ocean County area alone. When it comes time to pick out the right school for you or your child, there are several key things to consider. To help you with your decision, we’ve put together a Top 5 list of things that a potential student should look out for.
- The Instructors
This may seem silly to most, but how does the instructor present themselves? Any instructor that carries a black belt around his or her waist should be able to present themselves in a respectful and disciplined manner. Quite honestly, are they practicing what they preach? For example, nutrition and health are very important aspects of any fitness routine. If you see your instructor smoking or constantly eating a diet consisting of junk food, are they really committed to what they do?
As a prospective new student, it is important that you feel comfortable with your instructor(s). Don’t be afraid to ask them questions. For example:
- How long have you been training in the martial art that you’re teaching?
- What’s your background in?
- How long did it take you to achieve your rank(s)?
- What are your goals as an instructor and as a student yourself? Don’t be afraid to ask these types of questions. At the end of the day, you’re paying them to teach you and you need to feel comfortable.
Some people are just more clean then others, but when it comes to a school you must make sure it’s a clean environment. With people working out barefoot and sweating there are far too many ways for germs and disease to spread. Make sure you visit the school you are interested in and be observant as you walk around it. Do the mats look clean and well kept? Is the waiting area dirty? Are the ceiling of walls falling apart? And let’s not forget…is the equipment put away or just thrown around?
Put it this way: If some of those answers come back with a “no”, will the school and its instructor(s) respect you and your belongings if they don’t respect theirs?
How far is the school from your house or work? You have to consider this to balance your home and training life. Some people don’t mind a little drive, but some people do. So when choosing a school make sure it’s within a radius of what you are comfortable driving too.
4. Visit the School
At any point on your journey to finding a school to train at you should go and visit. Of course you should check them out online, but it’s equally beneficial to do so in person. This is a good way to find out what a normal day and night is like at the school, especially when they are not expecting a new student to pop in. This also gives you a chance to pick up a schedule to see if they have classes that fit into your life.
5. Current Students
You can tell a lot about a school just by the students that are currently enrolled. Are they showing respect to the instructors and each other? Remember you’re going to be training with these people so make sure it’s with people you want to be with. At Shore Kickboxing we pride ourselves on keeping a family environment where you’re treated like a person and not a number.
So there you have it. Our Top 5 things to look at when picking a martial arts school by seasoned instructors themselves. Remember when picking a school it has to be right for you, not right for the instructor. Do not be forced into anything or try anything if you are not comfortable. Training in any martial art is an amazing experience that can quickly become a lifestyle (it did for us), so make sure to think long term and find out if the school and the instructors are right for you!
Until next time, stay positive and keep up the good vibes!
